Whitmer Voices Support For Trump Tariffs
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer voiced support for Trump’s tariffs while speaking in Washington, D.C. “I understand the motivation behind the tariffs… We do need to make more stuff in America… We do need fair trade,” Whitmer acknowledged.
Trump yesterday announced that he was removing the tariffs on most our trading partners for 90 days, while continuing to escalate tariffs on China. The market rebounded very positively to the news, with some of the biggest one day gains in history of the Stock Market.
Whitmer was also at the White House yesterday, where Trump somewhat unexpectedly praised the Michigan governor, while signing executive orders
“We’re honored to have Gretchen Whitmer from Michigan — great state of Michigan — and she’s really done an excellent job and is a very good person,” the President said.
Whitmer is likely to run for the Democratic nomination in 2028. Her support for Trump’s tariff policy could come back to haunt her in the primary, as her opponents will likely criticize her for backing any Trump-era policies. However, she may already have her eyes on the general election with those statements.
Michigan is a state that has been hurt badly by trade, and is a critical swing state to win in the general election. So given all that, it does make her comments make more sense.
