Trump’s Tariffs Are Working—Just Ask These Countries

In light of the new reciprocal tariffs that the Trump administration has recently implemented, several countries have stated their willingness to drop their tariffs in response.

Taiwan, Vietnam, India, Argentina, Japan, among others, have expressed a willingness to drop their tariffs on the United States. The White House has claimed that over 50 countries have expressed interest in dropping their tariffs as well.

Trump labeled implementation the new tariffs as “liberation day”. Trump hopes reciprocal tariffs will lead to a manufacturing boom—or at the very least, to more fair trade.

Many economists have argued that tariffs are a net negative for the economy, touting the benefits of free trade, while ignoring the fact that we haven’t really had free trade. These other countries have maintained far more barriers in their markets than the U.S. has.

Wall Street has not taken the new tariff policy well, with DOW FUTURES dropping dramatically since the implementation of the new tariffs. But these new policies aren’t for Wall Street, they are for Maine Street.

Reciprocal tariffs was a key policy Trump touted during all three of his presidential runs. “Taxpayers have been ripped off for more than 50 years,” Trump said during the tariff signing. “But it is not going to happen anymore.”
