New Poll Shows Trump Above Water in Deep Blue State

According to a new survey from the left-leaning outlet Morning Consult, President Trump has a positive approval rating of +3 in the blue state of New Mexico.

Trump lost New Mexico by around 6 points to Harris, so having a positive approval rating there is surprising. It’s worth noting that losing the state by only 6 was actually an improvement for Trump, who lost it by over 10 points in 2020.
In theory, New Mexico should be a state Republicans can compete in, considering how working-class the state is and the fact that Hispanics are trending Republican. Unfortunately, many leaders in the Republican establishment still resist Trump’s policies and messaging—messaging that clearly resonates with those voters. If establishment Republicans were willing to follow Trump’s populist footsteps, New Mexico could become a true swing state in the not-too-distant future.
Other interesting results from the poll include Trump having only a +2 approval rating in Iowa. That probably doesn’t mean much—just Morning Consult being Morning Consult—but who knows, maybe Ann Selzer was onto something after all.
Interestingly, according to the survey, Trump has a negative approval rating in Wisconsin. That is something to keep an eye on. But given that it’s a hard state to poll—and considering Morning Consult’s track record in the Midwest—we wouldn’t put too much stock into that.
