Bill Maher Surprised by Trump Dinner: “Everything I Didn’t Like Was Absent”

Last night on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, Maher revealed details of his recent dinner with former President Donald Trump at the White House. His reaction was somewhat surprising.

“Everything I’ve ever not liked about him was, I swear to God, absent,” Maher said.

“He’s much more self-aware than he lets on in public. Look, I get it—it doesn’t matter who he is at a private dinner with a comedian. It matters who he is on the world stage. I’m just taking it as a positive that this person exists, because everything I’ve ever not liked about him was, I swear to God, absent.”

Maher continued: “At least on this night, with this guy—Bob, Kid Rock, told me the night before, ‘If you want to get a word in edgewise, you’re going to have to cut him off. He’ll just go on.’ But that wasn’t the case at all. I’ve had so many conversations with prominent people who are far less engaged.

“People who don’t look you in the eye, people who don’t really listen because they’re just waiting to move on to their next thing. People whose responses don’t even track with what you just said. But none of that with him. He mostly steered the conversation to, ‘What do you think about this?’

”I know your mind is blown. So is mine.”

Anyone familiar with Trump’s history likely wouldn’t be surprised by Maher’s experience. Trump has long been known as a gracious host, even to those who have been critical of him.

Maher made it clear that this experience wouldn’t change how he covers Trump—and that he doesn’t care what the Left thinks of the meeting.
